Doctors who obtained specialty diplomate status have gone through rigorous training consisting of four years of undergraduate work, four years of veterinary schooling (graduate), one year of internship, and two or three years of residency in their chosen specialty. After completing their residency, doctors take an examination called "boards." When they have passed all portions of the exam they then become a part of the particular college of specialists.
