Ophthalmology
Ever wonder what the world looks like through your pet's eyes? Humans have the ability to see and perceive every color under the spectrum. However, animals such as dogs have a slightly different visual system and see three times better than us in lower lighting. Their visual perception and receptive instincts provide comfort when you're home alone at night, alert you in the event of danger, and they can even save lives during a search and rescue. In short, although they make use of all of their sensory organs, animal's eyes are just as important to them as they are to us. That is why the Ophthalmology service at NorthStar VETS sees a wide variety of companion animal patients, including dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds, and horses.
Our ophthalmologist treats all conditions pertaining to the eye both medically and surgically. And because ocular diseases can be linked with systemic health problems, a complete ophthalmic exam is performed on each patient including:
- Schirmer tear test
- Fluorescein stain
- Intraocular pressure measurement by digital tonometry
- Slit lamp biomicroscopy
- Indirect ophthalmoscopy
- CERF exams
Some of the most common conditions treated include:
