Internal Medicine
The term 'Internist' is not what it may initially sound like. At first glance you might think, intern, that's what my friend in college is doing as a requisite to graduate school. In actuality, an Internist is a veterinary specialist with sophisticated training in diagnosing and treating medical diseases. Conditions where your family veterinarian may refer you to an internist are:
- Endocrine disease (adrenal disorders, complicated diabetes, thyroid disorders)
- Infectious disease
- Liver disease
- Chronic sneezing or nasal discharge
- Anemia or other bleeding disorders
- Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
- Complicated pancreatic disease
- Coughing and other breathing problems
- Unexplained fever
- Unexplained weight loss
- Suspected neoplasia (cancer)
During your first visit to an internist, your pet will receive a complete a physical examination and based on initial findings, additional tests may be performed. Our Internal Medicine department works in collaboration with your family veterinarian and uses specialized equipment and tests such as:
- Ultrasonography
- Endoscopy
- Radiography
- Rhinoscopy
- Endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Cystoscopy
- Fluoroscopy
- Bronchoscopy
Our Internal Medicine department is able to provide you with appointments and consultation 7 days a week. During your pet's stay at NorthStar VETS, we keep both you and your veterinarian up to speed on their condition because they are an integral piece to your pet's current and future veterinary care.
