Laser Therapy

Laser therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses different wavelengths of light to stimulate tissue repair, remodeling and regeneration at the cellular level. Lasers can be used to:

  • Accelerate tissue regrowth
  • Enhance wound healing
  • Increase blood circulation to treated area
  • Reduce edema and swelling
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce scar tissue formation
  • Regenerate nerve cells

What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Treat?

Within the veterinary rehabilitation field, laser therapy is routinely used for pain management. Lasers have been scientifically proven and successful in treating many acute and chronic conditions, including:

  • Cuts/bites
  • Degenerative joint disease/osteoarthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Lick granulomas
  • Periodontal disease
  • Post-surgical healing/pain relief
  • Sprains, strains & fractures
  • Tendonitis
  • Tooth extraction pain relief
  • Wounds

How Does Laser Therapy Relieve Pain?

Laser therapy works by stimulating production of the body's own natural pain relievers (serotonin and endogenous opiates) and blocking pain signals within the body's nerve pathways.

How Long Does Laser Therapy Take?

Depending on the condition being treated, laser treatment can be a one-time treatment or require a series of sessions. Often a series of sessions is required for long-lasting results since the benefits from laser therapy are cumulative (they build on each session). Once the initial induction phase is completed, the maintenance phase of treatment can be as minimal as one laser session a month.
