Veterinary Emergency Hospital Earns Trauma Center Reverification

(Robbinsville, NJ, May 3, 2019) - NorthStar VETS received its VetCOT Level II reverification from the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Currently, only about 26 veterinary hospitals in the United States have earned this distinction. The purpose of the VetCOT initiative is to enhance trauma patient care while promoting research collaborations among recognized veterinary trauma centers. NorthStar VETS is already a VECCS Level I trauma center under the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Veterinary emergency hospitals are required to be VECCS certified before they can be eligible for Trauma Certification.

Dr. Barbara Maton, Chief Medical Officer at NorthStar VETS, commented on the reverification. According to VetCOT, the organization that sets standards for veterinary trauma centers, a Level II facility has the commitment, resources, and skilled personnel necessary to provide sophisticated medical, surgical, emergent and critical care for ill or injured animals. These hospitals are open to receive small animal trauma patients (and other emergencies) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Level II facilities must have specialists in emergency and critical care, surgery, and internal medicine. Additionally, these centers have a radiologist available for consultation.

The differences between VetCOT and VECCS certification
The application process for VECCS Facility Certification is through the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. It identifies a hospital as having the required physical resources and staffing to treat emergent and critically ill veterinary patients. The VetCOT VTC initiative is supported by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), and exemplifies the team-based approach to trauma care. It recognizes veterinary hospitals that have a commitment to continual process improvement, education enhancement and internal (between specialty groups) and external (between trauma centers) collaborations. Level II VTCs will have a diverse team of specialists and staff that play an integral role in the stabilization and recovery of veterinary trauma patients.
