Zoo's tiger cub recovering after leg injury (PHOTOS)

BRIDGETON -- One of the Bengal tiger cubs at Cohanzick Zoo took a trip to the veterinarian recently when zookeepers noticed him walking with a slight limp.

Veterinarians discovered that Rishi had a small fracture in his fibula and recommended two weeks of rest for the tiger cub, according to the zoo's Facebook page. A note at the Cohanzick Zoo's tiger exhibit has been placed to let people know that Rishi's brother Mahesha will only be out in the pen for visitors for a limited amount of time during Rishi's convalescence.

Zookeepers took Rishi to NorthStar Vets, a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital in Maple Shade Township, because of Rishi's limp. Rishi had the limp for two weeks and the zookeepers kept an eye on him and treated him before taking him to the vet.

Rishi arrived in a carrier, was anesthetized and underwent scans before doctors found the fracture.

Ganesha and Rishi live in the tiger enclosure at the Cohanzick Zoo. They were born in North Carolina on Sept. 30 and were brought to the zoo after Ganesha, the zoo's white tiger, died in 2015.

Rishi means poet in Jindu and Ganesha is named after a Hindu god that represents art.

Ganesha can still be seen at the tiger enclosure but only from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. while Rishi is recuperating.

Cohanzick Zoo thanks Dr. Jonathan Bergmann and Dr. Linda Bohn -- along with the staff of NorthStar -- in a Facebook post about Rishi. The zoo also thanks the Cohanzick Zoological Society for paying for the medical care.
