Veterinary Hospital Studies Total Hip for Dogs

Veterinary Hospital Investigates New Total Hip Surgical Technique to Help Dogs

(Robbinsville, NJ, January 21, 2019) - NorthStar VETS is currently enrolling patients in an important study to advance the field of canine orthopedics. Daniel Stobie, DVM, MS, DAVCS, Chief of Staff and Veterinary Surgeon commented on the study's new technique to replace hips in dogs, "Traditionally, total hip replacement involves 'reaming' the femoral canal and using implants that are impacted or cemented into the femur. The new total hip replacement system replaces the femoral head and the implant is placed without reaming or the use of bone cement, which minimizes adverse reactions and encourages bone growth for stability. It also avoids complications related to using cement, such as loosening or infection." Learn more about this and other clinical trials at www.northstarvets.com/clinical-trials.

NorthStar VETS Founder and Chief of Staff Daniel Stobie, DVM, MS, DACVS, has successfully performed this procedure and is ready to study it further.

Participation in this study includes:

  • Anesthesia, surgery, post-op rehabilitation
  • Inpatient hospitalization and around-the-clock nursing care
  • Routine follow-up visits at 10-14 days (suture removal), 6 weeks, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively
  • Postoperative x-rays to monitor healing
Eligibility criteria:
  • Diagnosed with hip dysplasia
  • Less than five years old
  • Weighs more than 50 lbs.
  • No other orthopedic or neurologic disease
  • Otherwise in good health
If your family veterinarian diagnoses your dog with a hip issue that needs surgery, contact NorthStar VETS at 609.259.8300 to get additional information and to schedule an appointment.
